Abortion Forgiveness and the Healing Power of Christ Jesus
Many women who have had an abortion are plagued with shame and ask, “Will God forgive me for having an abortion?”
God sees you. He knows your past, your pain, and the guilt you may be carrying. And He loves you and wants to help you move beyond the shame.
What the Bible Says About Abortion
Many women (and men) who’ve endured an abortion commonly feel sad, angry, guilty, and ashamed about their experience.
It helps to turn to scripture and the vital truth that our past choices cannot rob us of God’s love, all-embracing forgiveness, and eternal life offered freely through Jesus Christ. You can receive abortion forgiveness.
Will God Forgive Me for Having an Abortion?
The Bible doesn’t directly talk about abortion as a sin and the grace provided to overcome the shame associated with having an abortion.
However, the Bible contains verses about God’s abundant grace and forgiveness for everyone who sins, which is all of us. Prayerfully read these verses below and apply them to your life. If you keep a journal, consider writing these verses and praying them back to the Father.
God’s Abundant Grace and Forgiveness
1. James 5:16 NIV
“Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective.” – James 5:16 NIV
In this verse, you’re encouraged to confess your sins to God and one another. God hears your prayers, including repentance for your abortion, and you’ll receive the forgiveness of sins.
James inspires his readers to depend on God for forgiveness in all areas of their lives, including abortion forgiveness. Confession and praying with others should be a regular part of embracing a culture of life.

2. Psalm 32:1 NIV
“Blessed is the one whose transgressions are forgiven, whose sins are covered. Blessed is the one whose sin the Lord does not count against them and in whose spirit is no deceit.” – Psalm 32:1 NIV
Did you know that David committed murder? This man, who was called a man after God’s heart, committed a “big” sin. He had Uriah, Bethsheba’s husband, killed in battle so David could take Bethsheba as his wife.
You may be wondering, “Does God forgive abortion?” Yes, He does. In Psalm 32:1, David is expressing the reality of one whose sins are forgiven—he is blessed. Blessed means happy and results in deep joy and contentment.
You can have deep joy, contentment, and peace when you confess your sins and realize that God forgives you.
3. Isaiah 43:2 NIV
“When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and when you pass through the rivers, they will not sweep over you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned; the flames will not set you ablaze.” – Isaiah 43:2 NIV
God is with you in all of life’s trials; He walks alongside you every step of the way. God is with you as you journey through abortion healing. You aren’t alone. God offers abortion forgiveness.
4. Ephesians 4:25-27 NIV
“Therefore, you must put off falsehood and speak truthfully to your neighbor, for we are all members of one body. ‘In your anger, do not sin.’ Do not let the sun go down while you are still angry, and do not let the devil get a foothold.” – Ephesians 4:25-27 NIV
Don’t allow Satan to cause you to doubt God’s grace and forgiveness. Remember, he is the father of lies (see John 8:44 NIV).
Instead, go to Christ with your anger and any lies you’ve been telling yourself, including these questions, “Will God forgive me for having an abortion? Or “Can God forgive abortion?”
Confess your doubts and anger to God. Ask for His help to forgive yourself and others related to your abortion.
And seek other Christians who’ll walk with you as you grow in your relationship with the Lord Jesus.
As you spend time in His Word, pray, and get counseling from pregnancy resource centers, such as Align Pregnancy Services, you’ll find that your doubts diminish and your faith grows as you realize God’s love and grace to you.
5. Ephesians 4:30-32 NIV
“And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, with whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice. Be kind to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.” – Ephesians 4:30-32 NIV
Have you ever wondered, “Will God hate me if I get an abortion?” No, God won’t hate you because He loves you unconditionally and offers grace and compassion. However, the Holy Spirit of God grieves when you choose to sin, whether that’s telling a lie or getting an abortion.
Grieving the Holy Spirit in Ephesians 4:30, according to BibleRef.com, comes from the Greek word lypeite, which means “to cause grief” or “make sorrowful.”
As a Christian, when you sin, you cause the Holy Spirit to feel sadness, not anger.
However, these verses also show how Christians are supposed to live by being kind to each other and forgiving others, precisely like Jesus has forgiven you.
6. 1 John 4:19 NIV
“We love because He first loved us.” – 1 John 4:19 NIV
God loved you first, and that’s how you can love others—because God loves you. You may be plagued with doubts, such as “Will God forgive me for having an abortion?”
But God loves you dearly and doesn’t want you stuck in shame. Instead, embrace God’s love and forgiveness.
Additionally, this love isn’t a feeling but it’s what you do for others. For example, God showed His love to humanity through His Son, Jesus Christ. John 3:16 NIV sums this up best,
“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish, but have eternal life.”
7. Isaiah 61:3 NIV
“God provides for those who grieve in Zion – to bestow on them a crown of beauty instead of ashes, the oil of joy instead of mourning and a garment of praise instead of a spirit of despair.” – Isaiah 61:3 NIV
As you journey through the forgiveness of sins and as you grieve over the children you lost through abortion, you can trust God to redeem your sorrow and turn it into joy.
In Old Testament times, people would grieve by wearing sackcloth, sitting in ashes, and putting ashes on their heads to show their repentance.
Jesus replaces your sackcloth of grieving for your unborn baby with a beautiful crown, instead of ashes, the oil of joy, and instead of regret because you received the forgiveness of sins. And you’ll want to praise the Lord because of his grace and mercy toward you.

Post-abortion Testimonials
“The state of my thoughts and feelings when facing my abortion pain was an intense shame because I knew I ended the life of my children. I felt like I didn’t ever deserve – ever, ever deserve – any happiness or joy.
I just couldn’t forgive myself and didn’t want to forgive myself. My time at the post-abortion Bible study was a safe place to grieve for my children.
I was able to receive God’s forgiveness for my abortions. That started, you know, my healing journey and it also started my journey of forgiving myself.”
